"On the Road with the original florida kid" Week47

Hello again fellow truckstars! It’s Week 47 and                                                                        …..you’re on the road with the original florida kid….

Grandma, Barbie, Pup the Wonder Dog, Tommy, JT and the whole gang here at the ranch say a big cowboy howdy "HEY! "

KITCHEN TABLE TALKIN’- Well come on in, check your boots, hang up your coats and grab a chair! Grandma has a fresh pot of her famous cowboy coffee goin’…a second pot..maybe I can get her to bake us up a batch of them extra large chocolate chip muffins of hers…come on boys back me up here…

Ain’t it funny how hard times make some of the little things in life seem so big…and maybe even special?                                           I don’t know about you truckstars, but I’m one of those who tends to get caught up in the day to day bump and grind of life…Barbie says, sometimes, that I take things too seriously and I know she’s right…I do.                                                                   Hard times, I’m finding out, also have a way of showin’ ya what you’re made of…in more ways than one……tellin’ ya..                                                   Hard times bring out the worst in people…but, they can also bring out the best….too.

The other day Barbie brought home this little bag from the animal hospital she works at over in the next town, so I asked her what was in the bag and she says "Never mind, just grab a chair out on the porch and sit down"…so I did, and here she comes walkin’ out with this giant electric dog hair clipper in her hand, has it already plugged in, says she’s cuttin’ my hair, ( I’m thinkin’ "Okay save the twenty bucks…right?….the ol’ mop was getting’ a little bushy anyway…so..) ) then she wraps a big towel around my shoulders, barber style, and proceeds to givin’ me a haircut….uhh…what ? wait a minute… dog clippers ?……I’ve never had a "home" haircut before…didn’t know my darling wife of several decades had such a skill either(turns out she didn’t…so…at this point truckstars I need to be careful what I say because I know she’ll end up readin’ this….get me?), so there I am sittin’ in this chair , kinda cold out too, Barbie’s choppin’…I mean…cuttin’ away on me…the hair starts flyin’…keep in mind it was just her and I home at the time(I had no back-up and Grandma and Pup are almost always on her side anyway…so..). Truckstars, sadly, but honestly, I can’t remember the last time, years maybe, we had so much fun together…laughin’(and I’m still not sure what about…)and just plain havin’ fun(she even sat on my lap and kissed me…wohoo!)…. but both of us realized, without sayin’ anything, that we really needed that…her and I…and that we both still truly love each other….just for a few moments it seemed like God turned the clock back thirty years and there was this bitty little woman who loved me so much it scared me, standin’ here in front of me…still…tellin’ me not to move…..fussin’ over me with such a "one of a kind" love in her eyes…just for a little while the world and all it’s problems were gone….I’ll take a couple of shaved bald spots for an afternoon like that anytime….

Truckstars, I know times are hard for a lot of us, but the other day taught me somethin’ about what really matters in this life we live, and however tough it gets, the things in this world that really matter – will still matter – and will always matter more than any trial or trouble we might be going through…I only hope I never forget that again…the things that are right  in this life mean so much more than the things that are wrong…..and, what you’re made of, today, is who you’re going to wake up being tomorrow

Yeah, unless a bag of money falls out of the sky, I’m losin’ one of my trucks this week, I’ve got thousands of dollars worth of bills on my desk I can’t pay…don’t know when I’ll work again, Barbie’s health is takin’ a little turn for the worse, I think we have termites in the roof….the economy seems more like the "great depression" every day….These things too, shall pass….but..God’s grace and the look in my wife’s eyes…never will…and I count on them both….         (and Please – don’t anyone think I’m sittin’ here thinkin’ I’ve just passed on this great and profound piece of wisdom, the fact of the matter is that I’m really not the sharpest knife in the drawer but I am a lucky son of a bitch and sometimes I even get to realize that…)

Oh right…the hair…Grandma says "It’ll grow back"….Tommy and JT just point…and laugh. I think I even heard Pup snickerin’ behind the couch…….damn dog….

TRUCKSTAR RADIO: I’m tryin’ to ramp up my broadcast hours to 24/7 so I’m still lookin’ for mobile internet active drivers who have a laptop, headset and www.skype.com installed(it’s free) or a cell phone or landline they can call into the station on to host their own show!(I also recommend for you mobile cell phone users to get a "hands free blue tooth, or a regular corded headset) Truckstar O/Owners of some of our favorite trucking sites are on board but we need everyday men and women drivers too….I’m usually on the air from 8:00 – 11:00pm most nights.

TRUCKSTAR TECH- My dream laptop? The new Sony VAIO Z Series Ultra-portable, or if I’m really in fantasyland the "AREA 51" by Alienware…Okay now with this class of laptop we’re talking serious money the Sony being way cheaper of the two….(shhh…don’t wake me I’m dreaming….) Most of us will end up with one of the mid-range models, maybe even a "mini"..I really do like the new VAIO Z Series(#1 on my wish list…hint hint…), but I’ll take an HP Business Class anytime too…or the "mini" MSI Wind NB. For us "sound junkies" the new ACER Aspire 8920G is "the beast"(6-speakers a subwoofer and Blue-Ray baby, Blue Ray…) and so is the VAIO FW Series(both are "big screen laptops). DO NOT forget to ask about service, parts/labor warranties!                                                                              The Big 4 – AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile – all have high speed for both mobile internet "smart phones" and mobile broadband laptops, it’s just a matter of what you need and want to do with the mobile technology. I may end up with just a mini-laptop but it’ll be 3G speed and as high def. as I can get it. Blue Ray, hopefully….                                          Smart phones definitely "rock" but they’re not nearly as versatile as a laptop, even a "mini" and the monthly is more expensive when you’re talking about "unlimited" web use per month and using different available for each model and carrier. Keep in mind if you want to stream MP3 music, watch video or films over the web,(and most of the cool new can do it) you need the 3G speeds. Also a little tip – if you’re a GPS person, look for a notebook with GPS "built-in" then all you need is a software program like Garmin MobilePC, one of the highest rated, is only $59.99 ! Think power adapters too! You’ll need one so you can charge your battery. Don’t forget to ask or check to see if the laptop you want comes with one. I highly recommend making a list of features you need, and want, in a laptop and use it when you shop!                                                                Shop both online and walking at an AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint or Verizon store to ask about prices and service, then compare, remember to ask about rebates and discounts for different computer models BEFORE you buy! Air card models work great and so do the new Gobi(built in modem) models. Need help? Contact me through this website or call into Truckstar Radio and I’ll be happy to talk it over with you! I’ll be doing a weekly "Truckstar Tech" show "on the air", but I’ll be happy to answer any questions you have, anytime. Okay?

THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT-  Winter time is also "germ" time….I always bring a container of "dis-infectant" wipes and a container of "moisturizing" wipes with me, I even use them here in my office to wipe down my keyboard every night when I shut er’ down, the dis-infectant ones that is, but particularly, when on the road I wipe down my door handles, shifter, steering wheel, toilet seats, pay phones, and lastly – my hands – before I touch my food or anything else, (like my phone), because winter time is also "cold and flu" season and it’s all the more important to do a little germ control. People who have colds and other issues are always touching themselves and then touching everything else in public places and some don’t wash their hands after using the restroom either….just keep that in mind this winter….and spring and summer and next fall too!                                                                             Now let’s talk vitamins!…Most of us have a "health food" store near where we live or somewhere out on the road we see them occasionally, and next chance you get, if you haven’t already, stick your head in the door and ask about "whole food organic" vitamins, if they have em’, grab a bottle, but check the dosage per day and get the ones that say "1 tablet per day", some of the brands have you taking 3 or more tablets, or capsules, per day, that’s too much for most of us to screw with, but, they’re also a good way, the best way, to keep the mental and physical "burn" going stronger, longer! THINK protein shakes and bars too!  So – it’s your call truckstar! You can also go online and order them, I do…try www.luckyvitamin.com  and www.bodybuilding.com (protein shakes and bars, these guys rock!) Keep your body’s immunities up with a good diet and "whole food organic" vitamins!                                                                 *Next week we’ll talk about the cardio-vascular system in the body, and the subject of arterial and vascular plaque! Problems.Causes and Cures.                                                            Did you know that arterial plaque in the brain has been directly linked to stroke and Alzheimers?

NOW would be a good time to get acquainted with your elected and newly elected officials (like em’ or not)Washington goes back to work in early January!                                                                                  HR6630 – (this is the Mexican trucking pilot program bill) It looks like we’re in for a fight over this thing, (since the President in his infinite wisdom for some reason vetoed it) but the congress(and everyone else)is on our side, this is do-able, and every voice counts! It’s in committee right now getting ready to be voted on by the Senate! Get involved!

www.house.gov – (to find your representative enter your zip code)

Don’t forget about abused kids…..they really need heroes….YOU?
PLEASE! Say a prayer for SOMEBODY today, pray for our nation, the world and the "lost"….                                                            I was once lost but now am found because someone prayed for me…….

REMEMBER – No load and NO paycheck is worth dyin’ for…..                     Don’t ever forget – I love ya…and I’m prayin’ for ya !

Play nice, drive safe and pull it on home………

           Saddle up truckstars…..let’s ride……

If you’re looking for a trucker movie that captures all of the romance, hardship, and truth of the road, short film Drive and Deliver is a DVD you should purchase for your next movie night.

Whether you want to compare your own life on the road to the truck drivers in Academy nominated director Brett Morgen’s newest film, or show your family how life on the road can be, this documentary is one that all should see. Like a hot Hollywood movie, this documentary follows three truckers as they make their deliveries around the country. Just like you, these long-haul truckers have dreams and aspirations, families, and a unique relationship with their occupation. These truckers are willing to speak candidly about it all to truckers and non-truckers alike.

But this documentary isn’t just about the industry. Instead, it’s also about the truck—more specifically, the new Lone Stars by Navistar. In fact, Navistar is sponsoring the whole film. While some may dismiss this as shameless consumerism, the producers of the film and some of its viewers agree that the importance of the truck in the industry allows for its place as center sage in the movie.

For truckers, their families, and interested others, this documentary is worth viewing for a variety of reasons. First of all, truckers can compare their own experiences to that of the three truckers in the film. Whether they’re discussing their families or how they first got started in the industry, some truckers may believe the stories of these three icons mimics their own, while others might be shocked at the differences. Regardless, truckers can rest assured that this movie will stimulate discussion about their occupations among family members.

But for those who just take in movies about the music, Drive and Deliver carries quite an excellent selection of tunes, such as those from Lynard Skynard, The Marshall Tucker Band, and Hank Williams. Truckers who want to check out the new Lone Stars should also view the film, as several shots of the new truck can leave truckers ready to head to the dealership.

Now available on DVD, Drive and Deliver is a unique documentary that pairs real-life with real equipment to tell the stories of truckers to other truckers and their families. Whether you’re a long-haul trucker or a local driver, it’s definitely worth the watch.

The Stephen Harper Conservatives returned to power last month in convincing fashion, forming a stronger minority than they previously held and trouncing the Liberals in the process. One campaign promise that undoubtedly won some votes in this industry was Harper’s promise to slash the federal excise tax on diesel in half – from four cents per litre to two.

However, one must wonder if that promise will ever come to fruition. The promised fuel tax hike is in jeopardy, not entirely because of the Conservatives’ own doing, but because of a shameful move by the just-defeated Liberals and NDPers to form a coalition and attempt to overthrow the government we just elected.

If the Liberal/NDP coalition should successfully overturn the Conservatives, it will be a dark day for Canada, especially if Stephane Dion is chosen to act as PM. (Bob Rae’s not a better option either – as Ontario Premier, the NDPer-turned-Liberal proved he can plunge an economy into recession even without the global pressures faced today).

Canadians made it clear on election day last month that neither the Liberals nor the NDP are the right choice to lead this country through the rough waters ahead. However, due to backdoor politicking, it appears Canada’s decision to re-elect a Conservative government may be for naught. It’s embarrassing really. What kind of message does that send to Canadians? That our vote really didn’t matter, after all?

An unelected Liberal/NDP coalition government would make a mockery of democracy. Harper himself must share some of the blame for the situation he now finds himself in. His decision to slash federal funding for political parties really shook up the hornet’s nest. (Learn to pick your battles, man!)

But despite his recent missteps, I still feel Harper and his team are best-suited to lead us through this recession. We may never find out if the Conservatives will come good on their promise to slash the excise tax on diesel. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty is slated to release the federal budget in January – let’s hope he has the chance.

Last week I had the pleasure of participating in a shipper – carrier roundtable sponsored by Motortruck Fleet Executive magazine and Shaw Tracking. Lou Smyrlis, the moderator, raised the subject of industry consolidation with the group that was assembled. The consensus seemed to be that industry consolidation will continue in 2009 as it has in 2008, albeit under a new set of constraints imposed by the current economic downturn.

Bob Costello, Chief Economist of the American Trucking Associations, mentioned in a speech this week at the Institute Trade and Transport Conference that October volumes were unusually weak and reflect the downturn in the North America economy. This is worrisome since October is usually the best month of the year for activity. This does not auger well for those transport companies that have been in a survival mode during the “freight recession” of the past couple of years.

Is this the time to buy or sell a freight transportation company? There are several events that are having a direct bearing on the industry at this time. These include the credit crisis that has adversely affected the purchasing of houses and automobiles. Weakening economic fundamentals are causing unemployment levels to rise. In addition, the downturn in the value of housing and the stock markets are causing many middle class folks to feel insecure and fearful and less willing to spend money. The combination of all of these forces is driving down the demand for manufactured goods and retail volumes, the lifelines of freight transportation.

While these forces are at play, shippers are extending payment terms and carriers are facing tougher times borrowing money. Small trucking companies with a limited supply of customers and limited sales resources are particularly vulnerable. The end result is that this is an extraordinarily difficult time to run a transportation company.

We have more struggling transportation companies than ever before and they are cheaper to buy than they have been in many years. Mergers and acquisitions will continue, particularly for those companies with lots of cash on their balance sheets. However, buyers will be more deliberate in their approach. As we are seeing in the stock market, some sellers are simply capitulating and saying that this is the time to get out.

It should be pointed out that a number of studies have shown that over sixty percent of mergers and acquisitions fail. Despite the best of intentions, failure can be a result of several factors. In some cases, inadequate due diligence is done. Some of the assumptions made leading up to the purchase are incorrect. In other cases, no non-compete is signed with the owners. They may leave and form a new entity that competes “head on” with the acquired company. In addition to the owners, some other key people may leave and take some of the business with them.

For a number of mergers, the expected synergies and cost savings don’t materialize and/or the revenue stream does not meet expectations. In certain situations, the merger comes unglued due to poorly planned integration efforts, in sales and/or operations, or due to a culture clash between the employees of the two businesses. Customer affecting service changes, the departure of trusted customer service, dispatch or sales personnel (to a competitor) may drive customers to another transportation company. Many times the old owners find it difficult to function within the new owner’s environment or lose motivation due to the big payday they received.

What can you do to increase the odds of success?

The shipper- carrier roundtable participants suggested that the high failure rate will not stop the freight carrier consolidation movement. The current economic difficulties will likely spur an increase in desperate sellers and interested buyers. Critical success factors include:

• An assessment of the growth that can be achieved organically versus through acquisition, within a prescribed period
• A careful assessment of the synergies that are at play and the integration hurdles that may be faced
• Having a clear focus on whether the proposed acquisition is the right strategic fit
• Performing a thorough due diligence that looks at revenue growth, cost reductions, cultural fit, ROI, risk factors, retention of key employees
• An understanding of the expected competitor behaviour
• Effective management of human resources and customers
• Excellent post implementation follow up
• A thorough assessment of the financial risks and rewards

As has been proven time and time again, even the best due diligence cannot anticipate all of the challenges that lie ahead. Often the post acquisition reality is very different from the picture painted during the period leading up to the purchase. On the other hand, a successful acquisition can fill a void in a company’s service and/or geographic coverage and boost financial results. Therefore the best advice is buyer beware!

Ive been known to be critical of the Liberals “both provincially and federally“ from time to time. And believe me, Ill be critical of them again. But Im also willing to give credit where credit is due, and Dalton McGuintys cash-strapped deserves kudos for launching a $15 million incentive program for the purchase of and alternative fuel-powered commercial vehicles.

Such incentives are widely available in the US, and have helped edge hybrid vehicles closer to the mainstream. Without government incentives, very few fleets are going to shell out the extra $30,000-$40,000 a hybrid truck typically costs. The bean-counters are often too short-sighted to see the value that can be achieved long-term through the fuel and maintenance savings delivered by these types of vehicles. The government really does have a role to play in helping get the ball rolling and encouraging the adoption of environmentally-friendly commercial vehicles.

Thanks to the Ontario governments grant program, announced yesterday, more fleets will have the opportunity to invest in environmentally-friendly vehicles and see for themselves just how much they save in fuel costs over time. Im also pleased to see the program is retroactive to August, 2007. Early adopters should not miss out on the funding – companies that have already purchased hybrid or alternative fuel commercial vehicles should also be rewarded.

The details of the grant have yet to be released, but I have a feeling a lot of companies will line up for the funding when are accepted beginning at the end of November. The benefits of the incentives are two-fold. First, companies will see for themselves that there really is value in investing in green commercial vehicles. Ideally the fuel savings will outweigh the purchase price premium and fleets will continue to purchase hybrid vehicles well into the future, even without government grants.

Secondly, the program will result in increased sales of hybrid vehicles, which will help drive down the purchase price as economies of scale make building hybrid vehicles more cost-effective.

I dont think hybrid or alternative fuel-powered vehicles are the fix for all the industrys challenges. But I do think they do have a place. In the right application, these vehicles can deliver substantial fuel savings for fleets and at the same time produce less emissions, which benefits us all. Its been a long time coming, but the Ontario Liberals got it right with this program. Lets hope some federal funding will follow.
